An AI workflow can succeed in most cases and still burden the team with expensive exceptions. An exception budget defines how much human work and risk can be absorbed before automation stops making sense.
Define what counts as an exception
Distinguish rejection, low confidence, policy flags, tool failures and manual corrections. Without a shared definition, the success rate is merely decorative.
Measure time and difficulty
Two exceptions are not equivalent. Record the minutes, specialist skills and cost of delay associated with each category.
Account for peaks
Average daily volume is insufficient when a campaign or incident suddenly produces dozens of cases. Plan capacity and a prioritised queue.
Set an operating limit
Define a threshold that triggers restrictions, a fallback or a temporary pause. Do not leave the team silently absorbing an ever-growing workload.
Reduce recurring causes first
Analyse which causes account for the largest share of exceptions and improve input validation, routing or scope. The objective is more than simply adding human capacity.
