A query's wording can remain unchanged while search results and user needs evolve. Intent drift occurs when an older landing page remains relevant to the topic but no longer offers the format or depth users expect.

Monitor the composition of results

Record whether guides, products, videos, tools or news dominate and how this changes. Look beyond the position of your own URL.

Examine queries and behaviour together

New modifiers, lower click-through rates and quick returns may indicate a different task. Use on-site search and feedback to interpret the change.

Redefine the page's main role

Decide whether it should inform, compare or enable an action. Avoid adding disconnected sections to cover every possible intent.

Create another URL when needs diverge

If two intentions require different experiences, separate them and link clearly. One enormous page is not always the solution.

Measure quality, not just recovered rankings

Track task completion, qualified conversions and query coverage. Recovering traffic without meeting the right need can be an empty victory.
