Many business processes depend on spreadsheets created as temporary solutions. When they affect payments, forecasts or customers, they need lightweight but genuine governance.

Declare the owner and critical use

Record who approves changes, who uses the sheet and which decision depends on it. A file without an owner is already an operational risk.

Protect inputs and formulas

Separate input fields visually and technically, lock critical formulas and use validation. Easy editing should not mean easy destruction.

Check against independent totals

Add reconciliations, ranges and known test cases. A sheet may open without an error while calculating incorrectly.

Keep version history and backups

Do not rely on names such as final_v7. Use controlled storage, history and tested recovery.

Define a migration trigger

Volume, multiple editors, frequent errors or audit needs indicate that the process needs a database or application. Do not wait for a major incident.
