A browser extension can read pages, forms and data across many services at once. Easy installation conceals access that often extends beyond a single SaaS application.

Record installed extensions

Use a central policy where possible and request a declaration for unmanaged devices. Inventory is a prerequisite for control.

Read the actual permissions

Distinguish access to a particular site from the ability to read every page. Assess clipboard access, downloads and content modification.

Verify the publisher and maintenance

Check history, update frequency, ownership changes and data policy. An acquisition can change risk without a new installation.

Restrict through an allowlist

For critical teams, allow only approved extensions and specific domains. A blanket ban without an alternative often leads to workarounds.

Reassess after a permission change

A new permission or behaviour needs a fresh assessment. Initial approval is not permanent.
