The category “too expensive” often hides low usage, mismatched expectations or changed priorities. Churn coding must preserve the customer's voice while producing causes the business can act on.
Keep the original comment
Save the wording and context before classification. The category is an interpretation and should be available for later review.
Use two levels of cause
Separate the immediate reason, such as budget, from the underlying cause, such as insufficient value or organisational change. Do not force every case into one label.
Add controllability
Record whether the team could have influenced the cause and at what stage. This prevents the roadmap from chasing events outside its control.
Train and calibrate coders
Provide shared examples and measure agreement on a sample. If two people code completely differently, the trend is unreliable.
Connect insight to intervention
Every major category needs an owner, a hypothesis and a metric. If a churn reason produces no testable action, it remains a description.
