An influencer brief can be so strict that it produces advertising without personality, or so vague that the creator must guess what they are allowed to say. The balance lies in clear boundaries around facts, rights and process, alongside genuine freedom in presentation.
Start with the objective and audience
State the change the collaboration seeks: understanding a product, trying it, visiting or generating relevant discussion. Describe the audience and what they already know. Avoid demanding awareness, sales, education and every feature in one short format.
Separate facts, messages and creative choices
Provide verified product facts, required warnings and prohibited claims. Distinguish core messages from language the creator should express in their own way. Do not request personal experience they have not had or opinions they do not share.
Define transparency and rights
Record how the commercial relationship will be disclosed under applicable obligations and platform rules. Agree the duration, channels and formats in which the material may be used, including whether the brand can use it in paid distribution. Do not assume payment purchases unlimited rights.
Design approval without cancelling the voice
Approval should check accuracy, safety, obligations and agreed deliverables. Specify how many revision rounds are included and response times. Avoid changes that turn the content into a corporate release when no substantive term has been breached.
Prepare for difficult reactions
Agree who handles technical questions, complaints or safety issues and when the creator refers people to the company. Do not leave creators alone to defend claims or handle customers' personal details.
Measure against the objective
Choose a few indicators: meaningful questions, visits, code use or completed actions where they can be measured responsibly. Record production and rights costs. Do not compare creators solely through follower counts or isolated reach figures.
