Switching to a second model can keep a service available, but it does not guarantee equivalent results. A fallback needs separate evaluation, limits and a visible operating status.
Record the capabilities required
Compare languages, context, structured output, tools and policy behaviour. The alternative model must support the specific task, rather than merely produce an answer.
Create a separate evaluation
Run representative and difficult cases against the fallback. Do not assume prompts and thresholds transfer unchanged.
Restrict features when necessary
If the alternative cannot safely support an action, disable it or involve a person. A partial service is preferable to an invisible deterioration.
Tell the user about the operating state
When quality or timing is affected, briefly explain that the service is operating with limitations. Avoid technical details that do not help the user.
Monitor recovery and instability
Define when the primary model returns and prevent constant switching back and forth. Record fallback run results for subsequent review.
